Chapter 13

Alex woke in the night, drenched to the bone in sweat. She sat up and felt Gaius immediately sit up by her side. He turned on the bedside lamp and put his hand on her cheek, and Alex saw his brow furrow considerably. Gaius held her against his shoulder while he called the concierge and asked for several large bags of ice to be delivered to their suite.

He then climbed out of bed and went into the bathroom to begin a cold bath for her. When the ice arrived, Gaius met the young man at the door and tipped him for his fast response. He quickly brought the ice in and emptied it into the cold water. Gaius came back and lifted Alex off of the bed and, without preamble, he set her down in the tub with her silk pajamas still on.

He sat on the side of the tub and wet a cloth, running it over her fevered skin. When she began to shake, he climbed in behind her and settled her on his lap. Gaius wrapped his left arm around Alex and continued to mop her brow and neck with the cloth in his right hand.

“I’ve got you, Alex,” he whispered in her ear.

She nodded her thanks and leaned her head back against his chest.

“You’re going to freeze,” she said through chattering teeth.

Gaius chuckled softly against her neck.

“No, I am fine. Temperature doesn’t affect us like it does a mortal’s body. Relax, if you can, Alexandria. I am with you.” He continued to refresh the cloth every so often and touched it against her temples and neck.

“Tell me about our day ahead,” she said, still shaking from the cold and her body’s perpetual battle. Alex felt his smile against the skin on her neck.

“Ah, in a few hours you will see someone you have known for centuries, Alex. Remember Isha?” Gaius paused, waiting for the memory to come to her.

Alexandria saw a beautiful lady of Indian descent spring before her eyes. She had long, flowing raven hair, and the most amazing soft, brown eyes. She was sitting with her legs crossed beside Alex, when Alex lived as Arianna, on a pallet in an open air temple. They were telling young students about the cosmos and of the one true and divine creator who made and loved them all. She saw one little girl leave her straw mat and come to sit on Isha’s lap while she spoke, and Alex looked on in pride and affection for her friend.

Alex raised a hand and covered her mouth, hearing a giggle slip out despite herself.

“Isha, my dear friend. I stayed with her for years, teaching and meditating. She is older than you by… four hundred thirty-two years and she came to our wedding. She is a beautiful soul,” Alex whispered in wonder.

Gaius continued to mop her head and skin. He nodded in agreement to Alex’s statement.

“You are correct on all counts. Isha has remained here in her beloved country, trying to make a difference in people’s lives.
